Australians - Study in Europe

This website is dedicated to making it easier for Australians to embark on postgraduate study in Europe.

As well as providing a host of links to relevant websites in Europe and Australia ASiE also undertakes research and consultation with the EU Commission, European governments and a great number of universities and foundations. The aim is to produce and update as much as possible all information concerning grants and scholarships available to Australian students seeking to pursue doctoral studies in Europe.

Austria

Postgraduate study in Austria is still largely a matter decided on separately by individual universities. Note that Doctoral degrees are largely less demanding and less equivalent to the Australian PhD. They usually involve taking some research seminars and submitting a dissertation. The highest Austrian degree, much closer to the Australian Doctorate, is a Habilitation, which comes after one has a doctorate. The Habilitation requires the candidate to write a second dissertation, reviewed by and defended before an academic committee. With this degree one is then qualified for supervise doctoral candidates.

Fees charged to foreign students are moderate by European standards. In 2007 the charge was €726.72 per semester.

Sweden

In Sweden there are both Master’s and Doctoral degrees available in a form quite familiar to Australians. Do note that the Swedes have two forms of Master’s degree, one that goes for two years called "masterexamen" in Swedish and also a one year Master’s degree. Individual institutions are who you should first consult regarding your application. Students, including foreign students, are not charged fees but you will be expected to cover your living expenses and to pay the student union fee, these ranged from SEK150 to 400 per term in 2007.
