Healthcare & Insurance

As a general rule non EU citizens are expected to take out  private health insurance before leaving their home country and to obtain a consular declaration of its validity for Italy.

Medical and pharmaceutical assistance for foreigners in Italy is regulated by international agreements and treaties. Australia has an agreement with Italy whereby Australian citizens are entitled to use the Italian National Health Service (Servixio Sanitaria Nazionale) for the first six months after their arrival.

This covers them for Medical treatment, including specialist services at public or other authorised hospitals and clinics Treatment as a hospital patient in public and authorised hospitals only Immediately necessary dental treatment at public hospitals Note that you may still need to pay for medicines, diagnostics and other tests To use these entitlements you could be required to provide proof of your citizenship.

In general terms note that all Non-EU students must have a health insurance policy; this may be made either after your  their arrival in Italy, with a private Italian insurance company, or before their departure with an insurance company here; in this second case, students had better contact the Italian Embassy for further up to date information on existing agreements on medical assistance.
