Australians - Study in Europe

This website is dedicated to making it easier for Australians to embark on postgraduate study in Europe.

As well as providing a host of links to relevant websites in Europe and Australia ASiE also undertakes research and consultation with the EU Commission, European governments and a great number of universities and foundations. The aim is to produce and update as much as possible all information concerning grants and scholarships available to Australian students seeking to pursue doctoral studies in Europe.

Visa and Entry Requirements

Australians will need a student visa to study in Ireland. Full details of requirements and application forms can be found on the Irish government’s citizen information website.

Alternatively you can apply through the Irish embassy

There are a number of regulations to which you must adhere when submitting your visa application. You must include your letter of acceptance from your college, and the course upon which you are enrolled must have a minimum study time of 15 hours a week. You must prove that your fees are already paid and that you have the academic ability to follow your course. For Australians this may mean having some documentation of previous qualifications available. Note that private medical insurance and immediate access to at least €7,000 spending money for each year of the course are both also mandatory requirements. Applicants must also assure the Irish authorities that they don’t intend to stay in Ireland following completion of their studies.

Processing times for Irish student visas vary, but it is recommended that you apply at least two months before you intend to enter Ireland. Note that there is a right of appeal if your visa request is turned down.
Regarding your family situation note that the granting of a student visa does not allow you to bring family members with you. A separate visa is needed for each person coming to Ireland and you are advised to make inquiries regarding this with the embassy.

Once you arrive

Assuming you are a non-EU passport holder you will be required to register with the Garda (Police) National Immigration Bureau in Dublin or the Immigration Officer in the area they are staying. You will need your passport, student ID card and a letter from the Registrar’s Office of your college containing the start and completion dates of your course. The International Office of your college should be able to assist you should you need help.
