Visa and Entry Requirements
Student Visa
As an Australian without an EU passport you will need to arrange a student visa before going to Hungary. You should make sure that your passport is valid for at least 18 months and are strongly advised to submit your visa application well in advance of when you will need it. You will be able to apply once you have received your letter of acceptance from your chosen university. You will receive this letter in English and Hungarian.
The visa you want is a D5 is a multiple entry student visa, which entitles you to enter and leave Hungary as many times as you want while it is valid. During the first year of your stay in Hungary your student visa will have to be replaced by a residence permit. While applying for the visa, please have a passport valid for at least 18 months, but preferably valid until the end of your entire study.
Needed for student visa:
- Visa application form
- Passport (must be valid for at least 18 months, but preferably valid until the end of your studies.)
- Three passport-size photograph
- Acceptance Letter from the university/college in English and in Hungarian
- Transit visa if needed
- Bank receipt of transfer of tuition fee payment or a Payment Certificate from the university or from College International
- Visa fee (equivalent to ca. USD 50)
- The Embassy may ask for your airplane reservation or fare ticket
- The Embassy may ask for a proof of accommodation

Registration Upon Arrival
Within 15 days after arriving in Hungary you will need to report your Hungarian address to the Municipality Office according your place in the city. You will need an original lease contract in Hungarian, the property page of the apartment and the official housing registration form signed by the owner. Information will be given at registration. In case of moving to another apartment you should report it to the local district authority within 3 days.
Residence Permit
Staying in Hungary longer than three months requires a residence permit. Application for a residence permit must be forwarded to the authorities in question at least 15 days before the end of their authorised stay in the country.
There are two types of residence permit:
- Valid for less than 12 months, or (the expiry date of the residence permit coincides with that of the work permit; students can obtain a residence permit for one year maximum after which they might apply for its extension.); and
- Valid for more than 12 months (not usually available to students).
In the case of a work permit the expiry date of the residence permit will coincide with that of the work permit. In the case of students, the residence permit can be issued each semester for a period of one year. After the expiry date of this period, students may apply for the extension of the residence permit provided that their status has not changed.
To apply for either kind of residence permit, or to extend an existing one, the following are needed:
- A visa,
- A completed application form,
- Registration of residence (dormitory, hotel, motel, proof of rent or other),
- Duty stamps (to a value of 5000 HUF, can be purchased at post offices),
- A valid passport,
- A passport photo,
- An official medical certificate (issued by the competent county institute of the State Public Health and Medical Administration according to the Hungarian residence of the applicant).

In all cases, the application for a resident permit should be forwarded to the regional foreigners policing authority competent at the future place of residence of the applicant in Hungary.
