Higher Education in Hungary
Hungary’s higher education system comprises 18 state-financed universities, one public university, 12 state-financed colleges, 26 religious educational institutions, and 9 colleges operated by public foundations.
In Hungary, higher education institutions are the public and private/denominational universities (egyetemek) and colleges (főiskolák) that are accredited and formally recognised by the state. These are specialised and organise courses in their particular field of specialisation. The range of higher education institutions includes non-university institutions (főiskola), university level institutions (egyetem) and some institutions provide higher vocational training courses.
Hungarian higher education has been working towards becoming part of the European Area of Higher Education for more than ten years. One of the major achievements of this work is the restructuring the higher education system in accordance with the Bologna principles. From the academic year 2005/066, all students entering higher education in Hungary have been studying in a 2-cycle system that consists of courses leading to a Bachelor and later on to a Master’s degree.
Courses may be full-time, correspondence or distance learning ones. In addition to state higher education, there are private and church-funded institutions.
Higher education is concentrated in Budapest, the capital. Most colleges and universities are situated in Budapest, but high quality higher education is provided in other major towns as well.
The standards of Hungarian higher education and the quality of its teachers and students can be compared very favourably with the standards of the rest of Europe.

Fees and Funding
Fees are charged for study above the Bachelors degree level and international students can expect to pay prices of over €3000. You should however check individual university websites for fees since prices can vary markedly.
In terms of funding note that at this point Hungary does not offer international scholarships to students from Australia. Funding should therefore be sought from external sources, including from the EU and Australia, see the JASON database. Note that eight specific Erasmus Mundus [link to EM pages] courses and scholarships are available at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the Central European University and Corvinus University of Budapest.
The Hungarian doctoral degree (Ph.D.)
The third cycle 3-year doctoral study programme already in existence will follow any Master’s qualification or equivalent title. In addition to the Master’s qualification or equivalent title, each candidate has to possess a type ‘C’ middle-level foreign language certificate (written and oral) and has to undergo the entry procedure which includes a written dissertation plan and an interview. Further entry requirements can be set by the institutions.
To earn any of these degrees, it is necessary to present and defend a dissertation. The dissertation requirements for each of the advanced degrees are different. The degree of university doctor is awarded by universities, and the other degrees are awarded by the Committee of Scientific Qualifications.
Administration:
The Student Coordination Office (Tanulmányi osztály) deals with student administrative matters: it organizes the registration of students; it collects course records and theses; it registers applications for state exams; it distributes student IDs, collects exam fees and issues the attendance certificates necessary for residence permits. Foreign students are always provided with co-ordinators who speak English or German.
Studying in English
In general most teaching in Hungary is in Hungarian and there is as yet no single site that aggregates courses that may be taught in English. However Hungarian universities are working to attract foreign students and also increasingly putting together courses with foreign partners and this is having the effect of expanding courses and course modules taught in English. At this stage specific enquiries at universities are your best way to find out about such courses.
The International Education site has put together a brief overview of courses in English in Hungary but it is neither comprehensive nor detailed.
