The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is an organization run jointly by the German institutes of higher education. Its purpose is to promote relations between higher education institutes in Germany and abroad, especially through exchange schemes between students and academics. As a rule its programs cover all disciplines and countries and are open to German and foreign students in equal measure. The DAAD supports a worldwide network of offices, lecturers and alumni associations and provides information and advice on a local basis.
For more than 75 years now, the DAAD has been committed to advancing academic relations between Germany and other countries as well as, more generally, to promoting the fields of education, science, culture and research.
DAAD programmes can be arranged into five strategic goals which facilitate their long-term orientation: Scholarships for foreigners; Scholarships for Germans; Promoting German studies and the German language abroad; Educational cooperation with developing countries; and Internationalising the German Higher Education System.
The 200 and more programmes with which the DAAD pursues range from short-term exchanges for research or teaching purposes through to doctoral scholarships lasting several years for graduates from developing countries, from information visits by delegations of foreign university vice-chancellors through to the long-term regional programmes conceived to establish efficient higher education systems in the Third World.
DAAD Head Office is in Bonn, but the organisation operates a far-reaching network of offices around the world.
