Australians - Study in Europe

This website is dedicated to making it easier for Australians to embark on postgraduate study in Europe.

As well as providing a host of links to relevant websites in Europe and Australia ASiE also undertakes research and consultation with the EU Commission, European governments and a great number of universities and foundations. The aim is to produce and update as much as possible all information concerning grants and scholarships available to Australian students seeking to pursue doctoral studies in Europe.

Healthcare & Insurance

Health care in France is provided under a universal health care system and is generally of quality comparable to that in Australia. If you are under 28 and studying for more than four months at an accredited French tertiary institution you will be eligible to use the French health care system. You enrol in the health system at the same time as you complete your tertiary administrative enrolment. There is a yearly fee of approximately 190 euros for enrolment in the system.
If you are over 28 the rules are different and you must buy a health insurance policy from a private insurance company. Proof of this insurance is required in the visa application process. Students 28 and older can obtain a special health insurance, the "CMU". For more information on student health plans, see yahoo directory of individual student health funds.

Healthcare & Insurance

If you are eligible for the health system it will reimburse about 70% of your medical bills. You can gain additional coverage from mutuelles (mutual insurance organizations), which, for an annual fee, offer various types of contract to supplement the social security health payments or to insure against specific types of risk (travel, sports, etc.). La Mutuelle des Étudiants offers plans for students, as does USEM, a federation of 10 regional student insurers.

Hospitals

All hospitals have an emergency room that is open 24 hours a day. Physicians and pharmacies are on call nights and weekends.
