This website is dedicated to making it easier for Australians to embark on postgraduate study in Europe.

As well as providing a host of links to relevant websites in Europe and Australia ASiE also undertakes research and consultation with the EU Commission, European governments and a great number of universities and foundations. The aim is to produce and update as much as possible all information concerning grants and scholarships available to Australian students seeking to pursue doctoral studies in Europe.

Trans-European Courses

Institute Europeen Des Hautes Etudes Internationales

This offers Master's degrees and Diplomas in Advanced European Studies and International Relations. Includes two terms in Nice, one in Berlin and seminars in Rome and Rostock as well as study trips to major EU organisations. Scholarships are available. Courses are taught in French, English and German.

Erasmus Mundus

Erasmus Mundus Master's courses allow to study for one degree in at least two European countries and come with scholarships attached. See our Erasmus Mundus pages

Denmark

Many Danish institutions offer study opportunities taught in English. The best starting place for researching what is available is at the Danish Education Guide (Uddannelses Guiden).


Czech Republic

Many Czech institutions do offer courses taught in English. However at this stage no seperate listing is available on the web so enquiries should be addressed to each institution seperately.


Finland

Finland has 20 universities and a number of them offer English as the language of study in some disciplines. This is a growing trend. In 2007 there were over 160 Master's courses available in English. Ph.Ds can often be completed in English but you will need to enquire specifically as to your case at the institution concerned.

The following universities all have large international student contingents and offer some, and even many, postgraduate courses in English. (student numbers apply to 2002)

Åbo Akademi (7,500 students of whom 500 international)

University of Helsinki (37,244 students of whom 1,926 international)

University of Joensuu (6,897 students of whom 411 international)

University of Jyväskylä (14,359 students of whom 426 international)

University of Oulu (14,500 students including over 1,700 PhDs)

Note also that Australia is a country that has a bilateral scholarships agreement with Finland so Australian citizens can apply for Finnish postgraduate scholarships.


France

France has an excellent higher education portal, Campus France, that includes information on courses being taught in English.

Areas taught in English include: Law, Economics, Engineering and Technology, Mathematics, Business and Management, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Natural Sciences - Environment and Health Sciences, Agriculture and Agroindustry, Languages-Literature, Arts- Design and Fashion


Germany

Germany offers both Masters and Doctoral programs available entirely or partially in English. The German Academic Exchange Service offers a searchable database of 84 programmes available in English. Note that if you are planning a doctoral thesis it can often be submitted in English with prior arrangement with your supervisor and department.


Greece

The Greek government is setting up and International Hellenic University which will offer programs in English and other European languages. It is due to begin operations in 2006-2007. For now those interested can only be referred to the Greek Ministry of Education site.


Hungary

The Hungarians do offer some English language courses but there is as yet no dedicated database to search for them. You are best advised to search through individual university sites.

However do note that the International Education Site offers an overview of International Programmes in English in Hungary that is moderately useful.


Italy

CRUI (Conferenza dei Rettori delle Università Italiane) offers a downloadable pdf document made in 2007 listing courses taught in English in Italy.


Netherlands

Holland is multi-lingual country and English is the main language of tutition. Thus almost all courses are available in English. The best entry point for inquiry is the dedicated Dutch site: www.studyin.nl


Norway

The main site for Norway is Study in Norway

Many Masters courses in Norway are taught in English and a searchable list can be accessed here. There are over 200 courses available.

With regard to undertaking Ph.D study in English you will have contact the specific institution.


Poland

The guide How to Study in Poland provides a database of courses and programs taught in English at various institutions in the country. The Poles advise foreigners studying in Poland to have a basic knowledge of Polish and many institutions offer one year courses to acquire this.


Sweden

Sweden offers over 500 Master's courses in English. Regarding submitting a PhD in English you should enquire at the individual institution. For courses you can go to the Swedish Master's programs database. You might also examine the Swedish Erasmus Mundus page.


Switzerland

At this point no major Swiss institutions are offering study in English. Work in undertaken in German, French or Italian depending on the geographical location of the institution within Switzerland.

In the final instance it is best to directly contact the institution you wish to study at to confirm that the information on this portal and on the linked sites remains up to date.
