Australians - Study in Europe

This website is dedicated to making it easier for Australians to embark on postgraduate study in Europe.

As well as providing a host of links to relevant websites in Europe and Australia ASiE also undertakes research and consultation with the EU Commission, European governments and a great number of universities and foundations. The aim is to produce and update as much as possible all information concerning grants and scholarships available to Australian students seeking to pursue doctoral studies in Europe.

Working and Restrictions

Australians on a student visa are permitted to work in the UK but there are restrictions
You must not

  • work for more than 20 hours a week during term time unless your placement is part of your studies, has been agreed with your educational institution and leads to a degree or qualification awarded by a nationally recognised examining body
  • do business, be self-employed or provide services as a professional sportsperson or entertainer, or
  • work full-time in a permanent job.

Also note that if you are coming to the UK as a student for six months or less, you must ask the Entry Clearance Officer (or the Immigration Officer if you do not need an entry clearance) for permission to work.
If your partner has been permitted to accompany you on a student visa of more than six months they are permitted to work in the United Kingdom while you study.

No one dies ever wishing they spent more time at home... I mean the office

If the papers are stacked neatly, it simulates work

Working after graduation

Some students are able to stay on in the UK to work after their course is completed. Work permits are normally issued where a skill is in short supply in the UK labour market. Actual policies on who is eligible for these change frequently and are information about this is updated regularly on the work permits section (of the Border and Immigration Agency (BIA) website).

There are also a number of different schemes, such as the Training and Work Experience Scheme that allow a continuation of your stay in the UK working with an employer. Details about these can be found at the Working in the UK - Schemes and Programs section of the BIA website.
