UK Entry Requirements

UK Entry Requirements

If you want to stay in the UK for more than six months, then you must obtain ‘entry clearance’ from the British High Commission before you travel to the UK .If you want to stay in the UK for six months or less, check whether you are a ‘visa national’. If you are a ‘visa national’, then you must obtain ‘entry clearance’ from the High Commission before you travel to the UK, even if you want to stay in the UK for six months or less.

Note that Australian citizens do need a visa to study in the UK for a period of longer than six months. Applications should be made through either the UK High Commission in Canberra or can be made through the Visa4UK website. Note that eligible dependents will also need a visa.

A visa is not required if are studying for six months or less. However you will need to satisfy the immigration officer on your arrival in the UK that you qualify for entry as a student for this period. Please note that if you are allowed to enter the UK as a student for up to six months, you will not be allowed to extend your stay unless you arrived with a student or prospective student visa, or are studying on a course at degree level or higher. The Home Office will charge you a fee for applying to extend your stay.

Note that overall UK authorities recommend that even those coming for less than six months will find more certainty and less likelihood of problems if you do obtain an “entry clearance” (visa) before departing for the UK.

Important tip about visas

Once you get your visa make sure you check the details are correct. An error made by the authorities here in Australia may cause big hassles when you get to the UK. Not least because the people needed to confirm and correct the error are likely to back in Australia!
In particular check your visa to make sure that

  • your personal details are correct
  • it correctly states the purpose for which you want to come to the UK, and
  • it is valid for the date on which you want to travel. (You can ask for it to be post-dated for up to three months if you do not plan to travel immediately.)

If you think there is anything wrong with your visa, contact the visa section of the High Commission immediately.

How does one qualify for an entry Visa as a student?

You must be able to show that you are going to follow:

  • a recognised full-time degree course, or
  • a course run during the week involving at least 15 hours of organised daytime study each week, or
  • a full-time course at an independent fee-paying school

You must also:

  • be able to pay for your course and support yourself and any dependants, and live in the UK without going into business or getting a job, or needing any help from public funds. (NB public funds do not include something such as a government provided scholarship, rather they refer to the social security provisions, including health and the dole, to which UK citizens are entitled. If you are still unsure you need to look at the UK provided Explanation of Public Funds)
  • be able and intend to follow your chosen course, and
  • intend to leave the UK when you complete your studies, if your course of study is below degree level.

An application for a study visa must satisfy the authorities that your intended institution of study is bona fide. This can be checked against the Register of Education and Training Providers (www.dfes.gov.uk/providersregister). It can be assumed that publicly funded institutions of further and higher education are included on the Register but note that any institution that cannot be found on the Register will not provide any course that will be considered acceptable for visa purposes by the British Home Office.
